Finance Operations

Summary

Have you ever dreamed of living in New York City and moving other people's money around for a living? Technically — that is exactly what this job entails. However, Yuzu is looking for someone skilled in Finance who actually cares about the world. We believe this disqualifies many people who come from a traditional finance background who view moving other people's money around as a personal quest for career success and stability.

As a Finance Operations Lead, you will oversee over $100k of fiduciary payments per day, and growing. You will ensure that people get their healthcare claims paid for accurately and on time, and that our employer customers have certainty over how much healthcare costs and the incentive to invest in improving their employee's health.

Background

Most people do not realize this, but health insurance companies are basically banks. They are banks that are not usually serious about finance. This is one of the reasons no one knows how much healthcare costs.

At Yuzu, we operate at the payments and administration layer of healthcare. We are a Third-Party Administrator focused on supporting health insurance plans that are designed in collaboration with primary care, immediate payment, and local accountability.

We believe transparent, organized, and flexible finance can increase trust between healthcare stakeholders by smoothing out payments and measuring results. We have innovated significantly in payments infrastructure built on Stripe Treasury + Stripe Issuing that lets us automate and customize how funds are provisioned and spent on healthcare.

Role

  • Paying invoices out of customer claims funds, ensuring that accounts are reconciled

  • Monitoring accounts payable / accounts receivable for the claims funds which we manage

  • Tracking and resolving claim overpayments

  • Working with the claims team to unblock payments by securing funds to pay claims

  • Working with Product / Engineering to build on our in-house ledger solution

  • Being pulled into calls with CFOs to nerd out about finance

  • Your job will change completely every 3-6 months as we automate repetitive tasks and grow our business.

  • In-person NYC strongly preferred

Qualifications

  • You are an honest and kind person

  • You have experience managing and designing payment processes

  • You understand that payments and high-fidelity base-layer ledgering is the foundation of fancy finance models

  • You care about the team

  • Experience in the healthcare or insurance industries is a plus, but not required

Our Commitment to You

  • We will be honest and responsive.

  • We will give you significant equity.

  • We will upskill you.

  • We will trust you and tell you everything you want to know about the business.

  • We will be in the trenches with you. We are not a hierarchical company. Everyone does their fair share of gritty work.

Process

If we interview you, you can expect the following process

  • Initial 30-45 minute conversation with either Ben or Russell

  • A 2 hour take-home assignment designed to be similar to on-the-job work

  • An onsite interview

We may speak with 1-2 references you provide

I-Couldn't-Help-It Rant

Health insurance is ultimately the most interesting abstraction that exists in the business world. It is a product that mixes risk, choice, health, money, trust, and privacy in the pursuit of designing and operating an incentive structure that enables strangers to take care of each other. Health insurance is invisible, it is a contract that no one reads and few common people can explain well.

To succeed in health insurance you have to understand the condition of the human mind, body, and spirit in the modern era. A good health insurance product produces fairness and trust, which are equally subjective and universal values.

In this role you will help people on the first days of their life, the last days of their life, the best days of their life, and the worst days of their life. Through the tragedy and glory of living, members will rely on you being the staid administrator that keeps accounts reconciled and fairness quantified. They will rely on you having the money they are owed and keeping your promises. Without you, they will be less able to trust each other and transact efficiently.

The enemy you will fight in this battle is bureaucracy, a truly formidable foe that has been eating away at America for quite some time. Whatever skills you learn here at Yuzu in fighting bureaucracy will surely serve you well to be a leader in solving America's greatest challenges over your lifetime.
